Bespak Expands Manufacturing Capacity to Support Chiesi CMI Program

The two companies share a long-term vision of delivering lower carbon inhaled therapies through CMIs at scale.

Bespak is increasing pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) manufacturing capacity to support Chiesi Group’s Carbon Minimal Inhaler (CMI) program.

The added capacity at the Holmes Chapel, UK site is part of an expansion of Chiesi and Bespak’s long-standing partnership. Chiesi is an international research-focused biopharmaceutical company; Bespak is a specialist inhalation CDMO concentrating on pulmonary and nasal drug delivery.

CMI Goals Shared by Chiesi, Bespak

The two companies say they share a long-term vision of delivering lower carbon inhaled therapies through CMIs at scale. Ideally, they add, neither clinical choice nor continuity of care for patients should be compromised.

Chiesi is working to be the first company with a portfolio of extrafine formulation CMIs. These include dry powder inhalers (DPIs) and next-generation propellant pMDIs.

Accordingly, both Chiesi and Bespak are focused on their commitments to climate change goals. Chiesi desires to reach Net Zero targets by 2035, and Bespak has developed a validated decarbonization roadmap.

The design of Chiesi’s CMI program significantly reduces (up to 90%) pMDIs’ carbon footprint. This happens via a transition to a next-gen, low global warming potential (GWP) propellant.

How Adding Manufacturing Capacity Will Help

Chiesi says reinforcing its partnership with Bespak adds industrial scale and resilience. Also, it strengthens Bespak’s position as the global industry transitions to these next-gen, low-GWP propellants.

Chiesi Group Vice Chair Maria Paola Chiesi said sustainability is not an add-on; rather, a commitment that guides strategic choices.

“We know that inhalers are essential treatments,” Chiesi said. “The environmental impact associated with them must be addressed without shifting the burden onto patients. The partnership with Bespak reinforces our efforts to reduce emissions across the value chain, while protecting access, quality and trust. Climate action and patient care must continue to advance hand in hand.”
